Annette Obrestad - Annette_15 - An Online Poker Legend
|
October 16 - If you've played in a high stakes MTT tournament on Poker Stars or one of the other prominent online poker rooms the chances are good that you've been in the same field as "Annette_15", who is actually a teenage girl, playing her poker from her home in Norway. Chances are also pretty good that she beat you that day, as Annette Obrestad is one of the best poker tournament players in the world today.
Her lofty online reputation was validated in spades when she competed in the first World Series Of Poker Europe Main Event in 2007. Annette_15 is not old enough to play live poker tournaments in the USA, as she is far from turning 21, but she is of legal age in Europe and many were looking forward to catching their first glimpse in the flesh of the teenage girl who is their scourge online.
She did not disappoint, carving up opponents as she moved relentlessly to the final table, and then in stunning fashion she went on to win the innaugural WSOPE Main Event, which was worth a cool one million pounds to her. The actual cash value is much higher of course because she also signed an endorsement deal with Betfair Poker to become one of their signature pros.
She deserves all the accolades and is worthy of the attention she receives as a phenom who is both very young and female, making her stand out in a game that attracts more than its fair share of overweight, shall we say sedentary gentlemen.
Finland has Patrik Antonius but Norway can claim Annette Obrestad as one of their own. She started out playing freeroll tournaments, and claims to have built her bankroll from scratch never making an online poker deposit. She probably didn't even have a credit card when she started out!
