Annie Duke - Poker Legend
|
She is Howard Lederer's sister and Ben Affleck's poker coach, but in her own right Annie Duke is one of the best poker players in the world. Phil Hellmuth considers Duke to be the greatest female poker player, and although Jennifer Harman has her fans it is hard to disagree with Phil. Harman is probably the best female cash-game player around, but Annie Duke is a consummate tournament poker player, regardless of gender.
Annie Duke learned how to play poker from her big brother, and who better to teach her the game than "the professor" himself, Howard Lederer. In 2004, Annie Duke enjoyed tremendous success at the World Series Of Poker. She finally captured her first bracelet when she won the Omaha High-Low $2000 buy-in event. She then went on to even greater glory, and considerably more cash, when she vanquished an elite field to capture the ESPN Tournament Of Champions Event. The first prize was a cool $2 million, and she not only knocked out her own brother, but also defeated Phil Hellmuth heads-up.
Annie Duke has amassed more prize money at the World Series of Poker than any other woman, and has numerous final table finishes to her credit. She is also the mother of four children, a feat in itself, and the coach of Hollywood wastrel Ben Affleck. The actor is a poker nut, and employed the help of Annie Duke to turn him into a genuine threat in tournament poker. Affleck won a major no-limit event in California in 2004, and earned $300,000 for his trouble. The money could not have gone to a needier soul, but be that as it may, Affleck was quick to give Annie Duke most of the kudos.
