November 5 - Online poker players who were inspired by the story of one of
the industry's greatest players, Doyle Brunson, will be happy to note
that his autobiography, "The Godfather of Poker", is set to hit the shelves this
month.
Brunson's autobiography will debut on November 11th, and will sell for $26.95
in the United States.
Brunson recalls his life story across 372 pages of action and sentiments,
starting with the inspiration he received from his poker playing father and
leading to discovery of
Texas
HoldEm Poker.
Brunson's father supported his family with his poker winnings but, unlike his
famous son, did not feel comfortable admitting his enjoyment of the game.
"Dad played poker for years and years and helped support us with his
winnings," writes Brunson in his book, "but never talked about it."
Brunson also recalls how his university did not take too kindly to his love
for poker and writes: "Hardin-Simmons disapproved of my poker playing, and I
eventually wound up in front of the disciplinary board five times for gambling."
Brunson's biggest battle, though, was with melanoma cancer which spread at a
frightening pace through his body in 1962. Although he was told that there was
no chance that he would live to "see our baby born", Brunson was miraculously
cured and his passion for life and the game of poker could be explained when
looking at things in this context.
Surprisingly, Brunson first shied away from the cameras when he first joined
the publicized world of World Series of Poker in 1972, fearing what the
publicity would do to his private life "and the terrible shame it would bring to
my family."
Thankfully, Brunson went on to become one of the most vocal supporters of
poker in the world and made a smooth transition to the world of online poker
with the launch of his poker site,
Doyle's Room.
