CBS 60 Minutes Screens Poker Cheating Investigation

December 4 - After much media hype and record breaking attention from all those involved in the gambling industry, CBS finally screened the long awaited 60 Minutes segment that investigated the online poker scandals that unfolded at Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet.

The segment, one of three on the total 60 Minutes program, was entitled "The Cheaters", and had correspondent Steve Kroft delve into the cheating scandals that rocked the industry earlier this year.

The program investigated how the scandals were discovered and the link between Joseph Tokwiro Norton, the Kahnawake Gambling Commission and the two sites in question.

At the beginning of the CBS program, Kroft questioned the legitimacy of online poker and stated in his narrative that online poker is "illegal in the US". Unfortunately, this respected correspondent did not bring any court cases or legislation to back up this claim. In fact, the entire 60 Minutes program did not make one reference to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, nor did it touch on the very controversial court case regarding Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear's attempts to take over the domain names of 141 online gambling sites.

"The Cheaters" focused on the players who began to become suspicious of the winning patterns on Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, especially Todd "Dan Druff" Witteles who described the opponent he was up against (and who later turned out to be one of those accused of cheating). "He was playing in style that was sure to lose," he said, "but he was killing the game day after day."

Another player, Serge Ravitch (aka adanthar) said: "What I saw did not make any sense. This account was simply winning too much money for the type of game he was playing. He was doing it by never having the worst hand."
