Chip Reese - Poker Legend
|
Ask any professional poker player whom they think is the strongest cash game player of all time and many will tell you Chip Reese. In fact, a number of poker experts consider Reese to be the best all around player in the world! Yet he is not nearly as familiar a name to the casual poker fan as many fashionable pros.
The reason that Chip Reese is not a household name may be that he is primarily a high-stakes cash game player, and not as big a force in poker tournaments, which is where television has its powerful focus. Reese has incredible skill and composure, and is equally proficient at all poker games, which is a rarity. Since the 1970s Reese has been the biggest player in the biggest poker games in the world, taking on all-comers and consistently winning handsomely.
Barry Greenstein regards Reese as the Jack Nicklaus of poker, which ties in nicely with the way most pundits now consider Phil Ivey to be analogous in his sport to Tiger Woods. Will Ivey inherit the mantle of the greatest cash game player in the world once Reese steps down? Possibly, but Chip Reese isn't going anywhere in a hurry. He resides in Las Vegas and is well known for his smooth patter at the table, his ability to psychologically dominate other players, and his ruthless ability to isolate weak poker players and separate them from their cash.
