Chopping The Pot - Poker terms
|
In hold'em when no one plays in a hand pre-flop (everyone folds) and only the blinds are left to act you will sometimes find that both players are happy to take their forced bets back (the small blind and big blind) and don't play the hand. This is an instance of chopping the pot.
But beware, because a lot of players do not believe in chopping, and you have to ask them beforehand. A common question at a poker table, always asked to your immediate left is "Do you chop?" It's an important question because many players, especially older, gnarled types with little joy in their hearts, do not believe it chopping the pot and will refuse to do so when they are in the blinds.
There is some justification for not chopping if there is a jackpot available and both blinds hold strong hands. A lot of card rooms offer bad beat jackpots and it might just happen that both blinds are dealt powerful hands that could potentially result in a bad beat hand. In that case they can deal out the hand, checking it down all the way, to see if there is a bad beat. However, a lot of players refuse to chop pots on principle. These people tend to be older, are usually annoying, and gain very little by being difficult in this regard.
Chopping the pot is seen by the majority of poker players as good manners, nice etiquette, and a friendly thing to do. Unless you've got an excellent reason you should be happy to chop the pot.
