January 29 -
Cake Poker confirmed yesterday that it would be returning
a WSOP bracelet purchased on eBay to its rightful owner.
The saga of the World Series of Poker bracelet began after Cake Poker hinted
that it had become the new owner of poker pro, TJ Cloutier's award that he had
won in a $5000 No Limit Hold 'em competition five years ago.
Cloutiers had pawned the bracelet and the new owners had put the item on eBay
for sale for $4000.
After bidding for the item, Cake Poker secured the sale and posted on its
blog: "Our initial impulse upon seeing the auction was to say, 'Hey, this is a
cool piece of poker history. We love poker. We should buy a WSOP bracelet!' So
we did!"
Cake Poker decided after a while that returning the bracelet to Cloutier was
the right thing to do.
"We can't, in good conscience, keep it from the man who rightfully won it,"
explained the poker site on its blog. "Which is why we've decided to return it
to TJ Cloutier, just as soon as we've done having some fun with it."
The
poker room would not specify its definition of 'fun' but it is safe to say
that it should not go beyond a couple of photo shoots with the bracelet.
The poker world is now wondering what brought Cloutier to sell his WSOP
bracelet in the first place.
Cake Poker in fact bought one of two that were up
for sale on eBay, which has led many to speculate that Cloutier is in some kind
of financial trouble.
The player has clocked up over $10 million in winnings throughout his poker
career and has earned himself six WSOP bracelets overall.
