Coffeehousing - Poker terms
|
When you talk incessantly during a poker hand you are said to be coffeehousing. It is a subtle and quite sneaky strategy whereby you attempt to distract the opposition with verbal flair, and also try to weasel information in this way from your competition.
Many top poker players employ coffeehousing to their advantage. Daniel Negreanu plays this gambit to perfection by initially befriending players, coming across as very casual and fun-loving, but constantly probing for a tell
that is given away during the conversation. In this way he makes it seem as though he is non-threatening (the furthest thing from the truth), and he is simultaneously gathering vital information to use against them later.
Stu Ungar was a legendary coffeehouser, but his method would entail belittling his opponents, trying to get a rise out of them, and eroding their confidence. Rather than feel warm towards him they would feel out of their depth, which was what he wanted them to feel. If they got angry he knew he was inside their heads and that he had them rattled. Another exponent of coffeehousing as a form of verbal abuse is Phill Helmuth Jr., who also enjoys talking about his own abilities and behaves in a condescending manner towards his opponents. We're not sure if this is exemplary poker strategy by Phil or simply his true
character and unfinished personality shining through.
Coffeehousing has two distinct advantages - it puts your opponents off their natural game by making them feel uncomfortable at the table, and it can also give you the coffeehouser valuable reads on the cards that your opponents hold.
