August 19 - It's been a bad month for the online poker industry when it comes
to the integrity of professional players.
Another high profile poker pro has been named in the multi accounting fiasco
that was revealed by perceptive online poker players, beginning with accusations
against Jose "Girah" Macedo.
It has now come to light that Daniel "Jungleman12" Cates was involved in
multi accounting with his colleagues, Macedo and Haseem Qureshi.
Cates first denied these accusations in a special interview held with a poker
site. However, he retracted his denial in a new interview and admitted that he
had been involved.
The young player, who has earned millions playing online poker, admitted to
using the accounts of Macedo and Qureshi on the iPoker network, using the names
Thoshisan, samchauhan and Girahh.
Chip Dumping
The three players allegedly opened multiple accounts and
manipulated them by chip dumping to make them look as if they were being played
by wealthy amateurs. Macedo managed to con a number of players by convincing
them to play against the fake accounts and managed to dupe them out of $30,000.
He has since paid the money back.
Some have tried to justify Cate's involvement, saying that he
was suddenly unable to play from the United States since Black Friday, and his
entry into Canada has been delayed - thus forcing him to take drastic measures
to open bogus European accounts in a bid to make a living.
On the other hand, Cates is a highly successful online poker
player who has won million on
Poker Stars and
Full Tilt Poker. He has denied
multi accounting at both these sites, although he has admitted collusion with Macedo and Qureshi on Lock Poker.
It is difficult to predict what this latest scandal will do for
the online poker industry. Some are saying that it may cast a negative light on
the industry just when major efforts are being made to legalize and regulate in
the United States and around the world. Others are saying that it will make
online players more vigilant, and it's pointless judging the integrity of the
game on three bad apples.
