Dan Harrington - Poker Legend

The 1995 World Series Of Poker Champion, Dan Harrington, sarcastically and fondly nicknamed "Action Dan" due to his legendary tight play at the poker table, and his frugal lifestyle away from the table, is one of the greatest no-limit hold'em tournament poker players.

In fact in both the 2003 and 2004 WSOP Championship events, Dan Harrington made it to the final table, and finished in the top 4 both years. This phenomenal achievement probably dwarfed his accomplishment of winning in 1995, simply because of the increase in the field size in those latter two World Series Of Poker main events.

Dan Harrington's frugal nature is well known to other poker players. Although he won $1 million in 1995 he continued to rent rooms at his friends' homes instead of buying his own place, because of the money he saved. He does not own a car (too expensive) and likes to live as inexpensively as possible. This attitude is reflected in the way he plays poker. Harrington is an absolute rock, capable of making incredible laydowns, and rarely pushing other players around.

Dan Harrington is a brilliant backgammon and chess player as well, but found his true niche in poker. His success stems from the fact that he is unflappable, technically very sound, and able to sense danger from a mile away. When he played in the 1995 World Series Of Poker and made it to the final table he proposed a nine-way split with the remaining players. He tried to argue with them that it was the most frugal option, ensuring that each one took home a little over $100,000 instead of risking it all for a 1 in 9 shot of winning the million. His opponents refused. As the table grew smaller Harrington repeated his offer to split up the prize money. Everyone cotinued to refuse, until eventually Dan Harrington was the only player left and had scooped the whole pot!

Harrington's recent book on how to play no-limit tournament poker, both online and in live games is essential reading for serious poker students. Dan Harrington's weakness is that he underbets in certain situations, but his rock-steady approach to no-limit hold 'em must be respected - his results are undeniably excellent.
