Daniel Negreanu - Poker Legend

2004 was the year of Negreanu in the poker world. The impish Canadian won the World Series of Poker's Players of the Year award and was also named Cardplayer Magazine's Tournament Player of the Year. Truth be told, he has been the top Tournament player in the world since 1997 with 25 wins in that time. In 2004 he won over $4 million from Tournaments alone, but cash games produce the biggest swings for players of his calibre, and he regularly sits down in enormous $4000-$8000 limit games.

Like so many top poker players Daniel Negreanu started out as an avid pool player before graduating to the biggest hustle of them all - fleecing the sheep who congregate at most poker tables. Negreanu is the prince of deception in this regard, lulling his opponents into a very false sense of security with his charming patter and probing conversation. In the time it takes them to process the thought: "Gee, this little chap is sure charming!" he has all the information he needs to crush them and relieve them of all their chips.

Daniel Negreanu's style is worth emulating on at least two fronts. He is a genuinely nice person, with a genuinely nasty motive at the poker table - befriending the opposition in order to weaken their game and strengthen his own. But he is resolutely cheerful and positive, both at the table and away from it, so who can begrduge him those incredible reads that he puts on other players?

It is an education watching Daniel Negreanu play No Limit Hold'em because he could care less about the cards in front of him, and instead plays situations and other players first and foremost. He understands that in tournaments with plenty of chips floating around playing the right starting cards is not nearly as important as making pivotal decisions later on in the same hand. For that reason, he recognizes that post-flop play is key, and if he can he will take any two cards to the flop. The problem for his opponents is that they don't know if those two cards are rags or gems. In this regard he reminds the Insider of Gus Hansen - these are the two best players in the world after the flop.

Daniel Negreanu has racked up many tournament successes, including three prized WSOP bracelets. He also won on the World Poker Tour last year in the Borgata event.
