Doyle Brunson - Poker Legend
|
History was made at the World Series of Poker on June 29 when Doyle Brunson won his 10th WSOP bracelet, confirming his status as a living poker legend. He joined Johnny Chan as the only poker player to ever win 10 World Series of Poker events, and Texas Dolly did it in style by capturing the $5,000 No-limit Hold'em, Short-handed (6/table) event, beating out 300 opponents in the process.
All of Las Vegas was abuzz as word spread that Brunson, the godfather of poker, and arguably the most influential player of all time, was in position to capture another title. He defeated a very strong final table, maintaining a chip lead that he had held since day 1 of the event.
Doyle Brunson has now branched out into the competitive world of online poker, promoting and running his very own poker room. Doyle's Room offers attractive software and fairly soft games, and it is well worth the time to open an account there.
Doyle Brunson's reputation in poker was assured when he published Super System - A Couse In Power Poker. The book was released after Brunson won the World Series of Poker main event two years running, and at the time he had no equal in Hold'em. He has often expressed the opinion that publishing the book was the most costly mistake he ever made. Even though the book has sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and is widely regarded as the Poker Bible, revealing his trade secrets to countless other players reduced the amount of money he could make at the poker table. He has yet to win the main event at the WSOP since the book came out, another fact you can be sure he knows.
When he did capture the championship he won with 10-2 both times, and in both instances he rather remarkably made a full house. For that reason the 10-2 in Hold'em is now fondly referred to as Doyle Brunson. His greatest contributions to poker theory were twofold: first he advocated playing the opponent and not the cards in front of you. His reliance on instinct and mastery of the psychology of poker cannot be underestimated. Second, he showed both in his book and in his live play that aggressive poker gets the money more often than not. Passive tight play, especially in no-limit or high stakes poker games, is no match for selective all-out attack.
Can either Doyle Brunson or Johnny Chan make it eleven bracelets in 2005? Only time will tell, but those poker players who are matching wits and pitting their skills against these two players are experiencing the poker privelege of a lifetime!
