Duplicate Poker Shuts Down Shuts Down
|
October 7 - In yet another short-lived online poker room endeavor, Duplicate Poker has shut down its operations just two weeks after they made a public announcement that business was booming. Who are these guys, a financial institution?
Duplicate Poker was launched amidst much fan fare, proclaiming its plans for the future to establish itself as a serious contender in the present online poker market thanks to a gimmick borrowed from the world of bridge.
Two weeks ago the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Duplicate Poker, Pinhas Romik made what many saw to be exaggerated claims about the site. Eyebrows were raised, in particular, regarding Romik's statements about the size of the fledgling site's customer base and its locale.
Romik said that Duplicate Poker was operating from New York City - something that seemed highly unlikely, even though the poker room claimed to be completely legal. He also announced that the site had signed up its 250,000th player!
"Duplicate Poker has quickly gained global appeal," hailed Romick, "and poker players at all levels are playing this new game and developing new strategies for winning. Our revenues have increased six fold since the public launch and we expect the game's popularity to continue its upward trajectory."
Fast forward a mere fortnight and the poker community woke up to an announcement on Duplicate Poker's website that it was closing down operations - due to global financial woes. True, Wall Street is in trouble and banks are crashing, however, surely the effect could not have been so quickly felt by this website that was supposedly doing so well several days ago?
"Duplicate Poker is sadly bidding farewell to its players," read the statement on the website. "Caught in the middle of the global financial situation, the company is not able to continue to provide service. We are a small victim of the global financial crisis. Regretfully, as of today October 5th, 2008, we are closing our service. We thank our players for being with us. Hopefully at a later time and in a better economic climate Duplicate Poker will re-appear. Sincerely, the Duplicate Poker Team."
