June 4 - After much anticipation and planning, it can safely be said that the
first leg of the Asian Poker Tour has surpassed all expectations, with an
excellent number of participants entering the Manila event over the weekend.
Over two hundred people came to cheer on their favorite players at the Dusit
Thani Manila, which served as the official venue for the six day event. From May
27 to June 1, 316 participants battled their way through some excellent games
until the final table that took place on Sunday.
The final contingent consisted of a mixture of talented players, hailing from
Australia, Korea and the Phillipines, to name just a few. The loud, and
sometimes boisterous Australian camp was possibly responsible for upping the
confidence of their David Saab, eventually cheering him on to a superb victory
with an ace in the flop against the Korean Chris Roh.
The Koreans, for their part, who had three players at the final table,
weren't too upset over Saab's victory, seeing as though he himself is
Korean born. Saab walked away with $280,000 in prize money in the first leg of
the 2008 Asian Poker Tour.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Asian Poker Tour, Chris Parker, thanked
his partners, especially the assistance of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming
Corporation and said that he hoped the APT would return to Manila in 2009.
The next APT event will take place in Macau at the end of August and will be
held at the Star World Hotel and Casino, before moving on to Seoul in South
Korea. The tour will end in Singapore.
