Guaranteed Poker Tournaments - Providing An Edge
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
Online poker rooms are competing hard for your patronage, and one way they seek your business is by offering guaranteed minimum prize money for their tournaments. These guaranteed tournaments, held daily and at a variety of levels, give good players a substantial edge. The reason for this is simple: there are often overlays in terms of the number of entrants vs. the prize money on offer. Any student of pot odds should know when they are getting the best of it, and jump right in.
Sites such as Caribbean Sun Poker, Full Tilt Poker, and Doyle's Room all offer plenty of these poker tournaments every day. Often I find that they are undersubscribed, and the poker room in question pays out more in prize money than they receive in entry fees.
So a typical event at Caribbean Sun might have a guarantee of $30,000 and a buy-in of $50. As long as they get 600 players their costs are covered, but the reality is that they will only draw 500 players. That means that your $50 entry fee is a 500:1 shot getting a 600:1 overlay. You're getting the best of it, a huge advantage if you know what you are doing.
My biggest online poker wins as a young professional have all come in these types of events, and if you play in enough of them you can show a substantial net profit. You're getting real value for money, and these tournaments are a lot more compelling as an argument in favor of joining a particular poker room than say the sign-up bonuses offered. Those take ages to vest, favor small limit players who can play endless hours of poker, and tend not to be that great of a deal in the first place. Guaranteed tournaments, however, now those are a different matter...
