Gus Hansen - Poker Legend
|
Gus Hansen has become one of the most well-known tournament poker players due to numerous televised final table appearances on the World Poker Tour. His incredible success at no-limit poker combined with his outrageous ability to play any two cards, and not forgetting his distinctive look (the missing member of Right Said Fred, or more charitably a bruising skin-head), have made him notorious and easily recognizable. On the eve of the 2005 World Series Of Poker Main Event he is our confident selection to win it all - if the tournament is going to be won by a "name" player he is the most likely pro to take the honors.
In the WPT's initial season alone Gus Hansen won two events and followed that up by winning two more in the second season. Hansen, along with Negreanu, is possibly the finest no-limit poker player after the flop in the entire world. It is this ability that enables him to take any two cards to the flop, and to play rags super-aggressively. Hansen will raise with anything, forcing his opponents into gambling because they have to decide early on if he has a premium hand or simply what is known as "a Gus".
Gus Hansen was a world-class backgammon player before discovering poker. In that regard he is similar to another fantastic poker player, Dan Harrington. These men clearly have a natural facility for game-playing, as Harrington is also a Chess master. Gus Hansen hails from Denmark but he cut his poker teeth in Santa Cruz. The poker games there are legendary for their looseness and all-out (and all-in) action. Hansen apparently played the exact same way in small limit games as he now does in multi-million dollar no-limit tournaments. His attitude is that someone has to win every pot, and most of the time it might as well be him. But that is all show. The reality is that Hansen plays his opponents first, and is highly skilled at reading their strength or weakness at any time. Because of this talent he has a tremendous advantage over all but the very best in the game.
If Hansen knows you are weak he can bully you out of the pot. If he knows you are strong he still has one advantage - the fact that he knows his opponent cannot put him on any particular hand. So, he may genuinely be weak in which case he can fold, or he may be even stronger than his opponent in which case Hansen can and will break him. His other great talent is his ability to extract maxmium value when he does hit his hand. Gus Hansen is a huge threat at every tournament that he participates in. He is also the spokesperson for an impressive new online poker room, PokerChamps. You can play against the real Gus Hansen at PokerChamps.com and there are special cash prizes any time you manage to beat him in a hand!
