Harrington On Hold'em Rules!
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
I've been in Las Vegas, playing tournament poker at the Bellagio, and while there I purchased Harrington On Hold'em Volume 2. I can state without any hesitation that this two volume work is a masterpiece and they are the best tournament poker books published to date.
Harrington is currently tearing up the North American Poker Championship. I settled for a win in the super-satellite event and pocketed the money instead of the seat. Harrington's book is what I want to talk about, however. As an advanced guide to playing hold'em, particularly tournament hold'em, it is unmatched. The concepts are not for novices or even intermediate players, but time and again while playing against the very best I draw upon concepts and tenets of wisdom penned by Harrington and his co-author Bill Robertie.
His theory of inflection points in poker tournaments alone, and his discussion of the importance of stack size to pot size; a ratio known as M and named after the top backgammon and poker strategist, Paul Magriel, is so significant that it will change the way all poker pros approach tournament play. It is just one chapter in a remarkable book that explains how to navigate your way through the latter stages of any poker tournament (the first volume is dynamite as well, by the way, especially if you want to start as a solid, tight/aggressive player, which is how everyone should start out anyway - playing creatively can only come once you undertsand the basics of playing well, in my opinion.)
If you want to make money in poker tournaments, or have any intention of playing poker full-time, you must read both these books. They are a lot more valuable than the tournament poker sections in either Super System I or II, and that is saying a lot.
