Hollywood Poker - New Player Observations
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
Hollywood Poker is fronted by James Woods and Vince Van Patten, but don't let that stop you from signing up and playing there. Of far more importance is the fact that it is a skin for the OnGame poker network (Pokerroom.com is the main site) so the quality of online poker is the very best.
What do I mean by the rather vague term "quality"? I'll tell you, since you're asking - it means that the software is exceptional, that the variety of games in terms of stakes and format (tournaments / ring games) is all you could wish for, and the player volume is very solid.
That last point requires a slight qualification. Although OnGame is a Swedish company the vast majority of players are clearly in North America. So, if you're playing on GMT or late at night in Australia you might struggle to get your exact game, especially if you're a tournament player. Cash games are busy around the clock.
Hollywood Poker might actually be a better bet as your entry into this software as opposed to the mighty PokerRoom.com. The simple reason is that they offer fantastic promotions, including big sign-up bonus offers. If you're a high stakes player, and I took full advantage of this as I tend to play a lot of high stakes games, you can qualify for an amazing sign-up bonus: 500% up to $1000 - You will need to play a lot of hands at high levels, but that kind of bonus is way ahead of anything else in the online poker world today.
Compare it to Poker Room, which offers 20% up to $100. The Hollywood Poker people certainly are ahead in that department. Even if you aren't chasing sign-up bonuses the key point remains that you're in the same card room ultimately, so why not take advantage of their special deals?
It's worth playing at Hollywood Poker just to see their home page where Woods and Van Patten glare at you in matching black leather jackets. There is a British word for this, and it's "poncey". Van Patten is a prat and a little low in the IQ department. Woods is so arrogant that he has transmuted smarminess into an art form, and of course he has a famously high IQ (which he will gladly tell you about at the drop of a hat). They balance each other out then in some regards, and the other "celebrities" on the site are fun to view, just to try and work out who most of them are.
Putting aside the endorsers of the website, since that stuff is fluff to the serious poker player in the first place, let's focus on what Hollywood Poker offers. It has a stand alone admin department and their support seems on the ball - the same cannot always be said for Poker Room. Their bonuses as a new poker room are stellar, and they are definitely marketing aggressively for new players.
All in all I highly recommend signing up with Hollywood Poker. I'm not just saying that because we are going to promote them at the Insider - I'm saying it because I play there and honestly feel that OnGame is the best poker network around right now. The games are tough but still profitable for good players, and there is enough action for every size player. Just promise me that you won't go all "Hollywood" on your loved ones; stay humble even if the people behind this skin are not.
