Irish Poker Championship Kicks Off in Dublin
|
October 29 - The Irish Poker Championship poker tournament kicked off today in
Dublin, Ireland, with over 300 intrepid poker professionals, amateurs and online
poker qualifiers vying for a piece of the championship's lucrative 100 000 Euro
prize pool.
As part of the European Poker Tour (EPT), the Irish Poker Championship will
be hosted
from today until Saturday November 3rd, and it has attracted some big sporting
celebrities including top snooker players, Ken Doherty, John Higgins and Steve
Davis.
However, the Irish Poker Championship is not all about poker but also about
charity, in the form of the 'Simon Poker Day' which is being held on Saturday
November 3rd to help generate funds that will go towards helping the homeless in
Ireland.
For instance, top online poker room PartyPoker.com has donated a seat to the
championship worth $2 000, while a special poker event has been included in the
schedule where one third of the 330 Euro buy-in will be donated to the Simon
Poker Day fund.
In 2006, Simon Poker Day managed raise just under 50 000 Euros during the
championship thanks to the poker players as well as private and corporate
donors, and this year the target has been set at double that amount to 100 000
Euros.
Said Padraig Parkinson, one of the Irish Poker Championship organizers, 'We were
thrilled with PartyPoker's donation and are confident that the players here in Dublin
won't let us down in our quest to achieve over 100 000 Euros in proceeds.'
