Jamie Gold Lawsuit Not Going Away

Author: Marc

December 30 - A tumultuous year in poker is drawing to a close but one heartwarming story refuses to go away. Jamie Gold, heir apparent to the title of "poker brat", refuses to part with a penny of his WSOP winnings and Bruce Crispin Leyser refuses to drop his lawsuit.

For those of you who missed the sour end to the biggest World Series Of Poker of all time, and probably not to be repeated any time soon thanks to US Online Gambling legislation, Gold was sued by some dude he just met because he promised to split his winnings with him and then ended up winning the $12 million first prize.

Gold only managed to get a seat at the WSOP by (con)vincing Bodog that he could entice many celebrities to join "Team Bodog" and play under their logo at the big event. Although he's allegedly a famous Hollywood agent he wasn't able to get anyone to join until Leyser came along. He did get two B-Listers (at best) to join the party and in exchange Gold allegedly promised to go 50/50 on whatever he won.

We heard some gossip from a good source Down Undah that the matter was going to be settled out of court, with Leyser pocketing less than $6 million but more than six figures. Now, however, we hear that a new petition was filed in Federal Court with hearing scheduled to begin on Christmas day. Dickens where are you? What a great Xmas tale this would make, as Gold battles to save his shekels from Leyser.

Based purely on TV coverage of the Main Event it couldn't happen to a nicer guy, and the whole sordid incident fits in nicely with the mindset of the hosts of the tournament, Harrahs, who lobbied the senator who passed the bill that screwed over a lot of online poker sites and that made the valuation of a certain casino group go through the roof. Just in time for that group to be bought out for even more money in one of the largest leveraged buyouts in the history of capitalism. Another great Christmas story!
