She might look demure and fragile but don't be deceived, Jennifer Harman plays poker for the highest stakes against the big boys, and she is a world-class poker pro. Harman regularly plays in the biggest cash games in Las Vegas, where the swings would make most poker players wobbly in the knees. No less a poker authority than Daniel Negreanu rates Harman as undoubtedly the best female poker practitioner around today. He also considers her one of the top players in the world in general.
Harman has been a professional poker player since 1995. In that time she has faced going broke once, enduring her only losing year as a pro. She borrowed money and built up her bankroll from scratch by plundering lower-limit games. Her story is a common one amongst the top players: there comes a time for most of them when poker bankrupts them, and the reason is usually that they were playing at limits that exceeded the protection their bankrolls could offer them.
Jennifer Harman used to date Todd Brunson, son of poker icon Doyle Brunson. She also contributed to Doyle's highly-anticipated sequel to Super/System. Harman wrote the section on Limit Hold'em for Super/System II. That comes as no surprise considering the fact that Harman has won the World Series Of Poker Limit Hold'em event in 2002. She also won one other WSOP bracelet, scooping the top prize in the 2000 Deuce to Seven Draw Event. In a quite remarkable display, Jennifer Harman outfoxed more experienced opponents, winning the event despite the fact that it was the first time she had ever played in the event.
In 2004 Harman had to have a kidney transplant. She is now heavily involved in charity work to promote awareness regarding kidney disease, and much like Barry Greenstein she believes in giving back to the community. Harman is destined for more high-profile tournament glory, and you have to go a long way to find another poker pro as well respected by her regular opponents.
