Jerry Yang Wins the 2007 WSOP Main Event
|
July 20 - The 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event has been won by
Jerry Yang,
a 39-year-old psychologist from Temecula, California, who not only earned
himself the kudos of winning the 'granddaddy of all poker tournaments' but also the
$8.25 million pay packet and gold bracelet.
Incredibly, Jerry Yang only learned to play poker two years ago but clearly proved he
has a talent for Texas Hold'em, a poker variant made famous by poker stalwarts
like Doyle Brunson, Amarillo Slim and Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson.
When Yang arrived at the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event this week
at the Rio in Las Vegas, Nevada he was sitting with the eighth largest stack out
of nine players, although not for long.
With a nose for weakness, Yang managed to capitalize on a some key hands to move
up the stack order, eliminating players along the way. Always cool, calm and
collected, Yang looked like he was in control of the game from outset.
Eventually there remained only three, Yang, South African Raymond Rahme, and
Canadian Tuan Lam. In just a few hands, Yang made quick work of Rahme, sending
him off in third place with a check for just over $3 million.
Then, not too long afterwards it was time for Lam to go, who finished in second
place with a check for $4.8 million, leaving Yang to claim the 2007 WSOP Main Event
world championship and $8.25 million richer!
