Joe Bartholdi Wins The World Poker Tour Championship

606 of the best poker players in the world anted up $25,000 apiece to try and win the World Poker Classic, the WPT's Championship. The first prize of $3,760,000 (plus some pocket change) was eventually won by Vegas pro Joe Bartholdi.

Bartholdi wasn't the chip leader heading into the final table action - that honor was reserved for James Van Alstyne, but he couldn't hold on to the lead. In fact he was eliminated in 5th place when he clashed with European poker star, Roand De Wolfe, and came off second best.

The first casualty at the final table was Men 'The Master' Nguyen. No surprise there as Men started the day short-stacked. He pushed all-in with pocket Tens only to find that Claus Nielsen held pocket Queens. But that sixth place was good for nearly $300,000 for the Master, and he's well on his way to replicating the amazing season of tournament poker he enjoyed in 2005.

Nielsen eventually finished in fourth spot. The top three finishers all earned paychecks in excess of $1 million. Roland De Wolfe finished third while the Canadian challenger, David Matthew, was the runner-up.

Matthew qualified for the World Poker Classic via an online satellite and it cost him all of $25 to do it. Not a bad parlay when you consider he earned close to $2 million.

But the day ultimately belonged to the slight youngster Joe Bartholdi. He entered the heads-up duel with Matthew with a 3 to 1 chip lead, and although he lost that lead he rallied to win it all. Once again the top players in the world were unable to win a major event, and now there is a new star on the horizon, Joe Bartholdi!
