Joe Cada Wins 2009 World Series of Poker
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
November 10 - A dude who dropped out of community college at 16 to follow his poker dreams has won the Main Event at the 2009 WSOP. His name is Joe Cada, and he is now the youngest ever champion having reached the ripe old age of 21. 6,500 players competed for the first prize of $8.55 million.
The most amazing fact from this poker tournament is that someone we have heard of made the final table. The odds of that happening are really long, and yet Phil Ivey battled his way to the last 9. But Cada caught a lot of lucky breaks when he needed them, battling back from a seemingly hopeless position at the final table when at one point he held only 1% of the chips in play.
Cada proved what most MMT players already know: skill means next to nothing, so go all-in, catch lucky repeatedly, and you too could win what used to be an important bracelet. If you'd watched this kid play you too would write with the same cynical flourishes, okay maybe not the flourishes but still with the cynicism.
He beat another guy you'll never have to google again Darvin Moon, who is a "self-employed logger" (say what now?) who looks the part, of a lone wolf logger that is as opposed to one of the best poker players in the world.
