Joe Hachem - Instant Poker Legend
|
By winning the 2005 World Series Of Poker Championship, Joe Hachem instantly transformed from one of the millions of anonymous online poker players into a poker legend, and oh yes, he also made a cool $7,500,000 - the biggest prize in the history of poker.
Who is Joe Hachem anyway? A former chiropractor and family man (father of 4) from Melbourne, Australia who moonlights as a tournament poker player, Hachem typically plays a lot more online poker than the live-game events. You wouldn't know it from his incredible display over the past week in Las Vegas, as he outlasted and ultimately outperformed 5618 competitors to stake his place on the famous wall of photos at Binion's - the wall for all former champions of the Main Event at the World Series of Poker.
Hachem is originally from Lebanon, but moved with his family to Australia 33 years ago in 1972. Although he plays a lot online he was not one of the thousands of Internet qualifiers who won satellite events that gave them a seat at the big dance. Instead, Hachem paid the $10,000 entry fee. The decision to do this was made easier by the fact that he had already managed to finish 10th at an earlier WSOP event this year - the $1,000 NL Tournament with rebuys.
Hachem began playing poker seriously two years ago, and is fairly well known in Australia for his tournament play, but his performance here dwarfs all prior accomplishments. Hachem was brilliant with a short-stack late in the tournament, and once he took down long-time leader Aaron Kanter he gained tremendous momentum and took control of the event. He said that once he had the chips in front of him he was confident that he would win, and so it proved.
Over the coming months Joe Hachem will become a familiar name and face to millions of poker viewers around the world who will watch the ESPN coverage of the World Series Of Poker.
