Johnny Chan - Poker Legend
|
With his unprecedented 10th WSOP bracelet at this year's World Series of Poker, Johnny Chan surpassed Doyle Brunson and Phil Hellmuth (9 titles apiece), and laid claim to being the greatest player of all time. He's certainly one of the richest, with reported earnings of over $65 million in his career.
Johnny Chan is nicknamed "The Orient Express", and you can always see his lucky orange next to him when he plays. He won the World Series Of Poker Championship in 1987 and repeated in 1988, when he defeated Erik Seidel in a hand made famous in the movie "Rounders". Chan also had a memorable cameo in the film, and still refers to it fondly in conversation.
In 1989 he threatened to make it three in a row, just as Doyle Brunson did a decade earlier, but was defeated by an obnoxious young player by the name of Phill Hellmuth, who is now an obnoxious older player. Brunson also came second when he tried for the hat-trick, beaten by an obnoxious youngster as well, the poker great Stu Ungar.
Everyone wants to beat Johnny Chan as he is a household name in the world of poker. Yet, as events at the World Series of Poker in 2005 confirm, he is still in a league of his own and one of the most talented players alive today. He is the overall leader in WSOP winnings, the overall leader in WSOP bracelets for first place finishes, and in 2002 he made it into the Poker Hall Of Fame.
