Kentucky Online Gambling Domain Case Granted Continuance
|
September 30 - The online gambling industry breathed a sigh of relief on Friday as a Kentucky judge granted a last minute continuance to a case that would have forced 141 online gambling domains to be handed over to state authorities.
The hand over would have affected some of the most popular online poker sites in the industry, including Poker Stars and Ultimate Bet.
The state of Kentucky, headed by Governor Steve Beshear had demanded that these online gambling sites "block access to Kentucky users or relinquish control of their domains." After the sites refused to block entry to any citizens, Beshear won the first round in a court case that would have had the online gambling domains become property of the state.
The decision by the Kentucky court to issue a continuance was welcomed by the industry, especially watchdog and interest groups which had been following the incidents very closely.
After Friday's decision, the one million member Poker Players Alliance issued a statement, applauding the court for its move. "The Poker Players Alliance is pleased that the court decided allowed for a full review of this case, including arguments from both sides" said John Pappas, Executive Director of the PPA. "
Until this point, the state and its hired gun class action attorneys have acted in an ex-parte fashion - only presenting one side of the argument to the court. The continuance granted today will ensure all the cards are on the table and allow the current owners of the domain names of the 141 websites to retain ownership in the interim.
The case will convene on Monday, October 6th.
