Legalize Online Poker Petition Gains Traction

July 1 - Online poker rooms are doing their bit to ensure that players sign the important poker petition doing the rounds these days, in the hope that more poker fans than ever will sign on.

The poker petition, created by the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), calls on the government to make changes to the UIGEA so that poker is exempt, and to license and regulate online poker in the United States.

"Please," reads the petition, "(1) Exempt poker from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and (2) license and regulate internet poker in the United States. (3) Respect the rights of law abiding Americans who love to play this great game of skill."

In order to give poker players an incentive to sign up, several online poker sites such as Cake Poker and Poker Stars, are offering unique freeroll tournaments to anybody who can prove that they signed the petition.

"We're very happy to be a part of this," said the Poker Room Manager at Cake Poker, Lee Jones. "We're offering weekly $3,500 freerolls and are excited to see that the petition is doing so well."

Poker Stars is also offering freerolls to petition signers and said that they would run on a weekly basis from June 27th until July 25th.

Greg Raymer, 2004 WSOP bracelet holder, urged Poker Stars players to sign up and added his own note to his signature. "President Obama," it read, "Poker is not a crime. I am a voter and a fellow poker player asking for your support of my right to play games of skill like poker on the internet."

The number of poker players who have signed the petition thus far stands at nearly 200,000, and was created by the PPA as part of the National Poker Week that will run from July 19th to 25th.

Players are required to enter their personal information on the petition, including full names, addresses and email addresses.
