Maniac - Poker terms
|
It takes a great player with a truly creative brain to play any two cards and win. It takes a drunkard with an empty tumbler at his side to play any two cards and annoy the hell out of the rest of the table. The former gets to endorse his own online poker rooms and video games, the latter is known as a maniac. Playing the role of a maniac as a temporary psychological strategy can work for skillful poker players. It's an old ruse, after all even Hamlet tried it, and it is instructive to note where that got him in the long run. Most maniacs are not playing a part, however. They have come to gamble and throw their money around. They enjoy bullying the table into submission, courting lucky breaks, and ploughing ahead with absolute fearlessness.
If there is a maniac at your table, betting up and raising every pot and mucking cards once in a blue moon, you need to isolate him heads-up. It's a decisive and scary way to deal with a maniac, but it represents your best chance of taking his money. It's a big advantage to sit to the immediate left of the maniac. That way you can re-raise when you want to play and winnow down the field, hopefully to just the two of you. It also lets you get out of his way for free when you have rags. When you're in the big blind and the maniac is in the small blind you should prepare yourself to play back at him regardless of your holdings.
