Many Personalities Impact US Poker Scene in 2008

January 1 - 2008 will be remembered as a year that online poker stood in the forefront of legislative action in the United States. A number of changes - some good and some bad - were felt, and behind these actions stood several prominent personalities who definitely had an impact on the US poker scene.

Who hasn't heard of Congressman Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financials Service Committee, with a life-long agenda to bring change to poker legislation in the United States? Frank's efforts in 2008 included the HR 5767 Act which would have forced the US government to define once and for all what is considered legal and what is not under online gambling terminology, but which was unfortunately defeated in the House. In September of this year, Frank made another attempt to regulate online poker, this time through the HR 6870 (Payment System Protection Act) that would provide guidance to financial institutions in enforcing the UIGEA. Bad timing put the potential law on the back burner, however, as the US struggled to face more worrying economic issues during the world recession.

Other politicians that have made their mark on the poker industry include Congresswoman Shelley Berkeley, with her HR 2140 legislation proposal, as well as Ron Paul who stood shoulder to shoulder with Barney Frank on several proposals.

One group that has been incredibly vocal in the past year has been the Poker Players Alliance, a one million member strong body that leads the way when it comes to fighting for the rights of online US poker players. Whenever significant changes occur in the online gambling industry, the PPA is at the forefront with explanations, comments and propositions.

But perhaps the figure who brought new hope to online poker players in the United States is President Barak Obama himself. As winds of change sweep through the country, these players are hopeful, too that a new Democratic government will bring them the regulated and legalized industry they so desire.
