Mark Seif - Poker Legend
|
The 2005 World Series Of Poker was notable for several reasons: top players such as Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, and Phil Ivey all won bracelets, and one player, Mark Seif was able to win back-to-back WSOP events in an unprecedented display of poker ability.
If you ask a poker expert to list the greatest achievements at the World Series Of Poker this should be the top five:
5. Dan Harrington making back-to-back final tables at the Main Event in 2003 and 2004 up against enormous fields both years.
4. Greg Raymer winning in 2004 and then nearly defending in 2005 by getting down to the last 40 players out of 5500 entrants, a remarkable feat.
3. Stu Ungar winning three World Series Of Poker Championships, a feat never to be replicated (Johnny Moss' "three" titles don't count since one was by vote, and all three were against tiny fields).
2. Johnny Chan winning back-to-back WSOP Main Event titles, and then finishing second in an attempt to three-peat, when poker brat Phil Hellmuth Jr, somehow beat him.
1. This isn't the greatest accomplishment in the history of the World Seies Of Poker, but it is the most recent, and it belongs in the top 5: Mark Seif won a Limit hold'em bracelet to begin the 2005 WSOP, and in the very next event he somehow managed to come first again! Both times he beat out huge fields of the world's best poker players.
Mark Seif is a former lawyer who decided to become a professional poker player. It is a similar line of work in the sense that you are paid off by how well you are able to deceive others into believing what you want them to believe, as opposed to convincing them of what is true. Poker and the law require a degree of showmanship, an ability to get others to respect you, the aptitude to think very quickly and improvise as necessary, and the ability to read what other people are thinking. Both prize the art of manipulation above all else.
Seif, who is also a spokesman for Absolute Poker, determined that he could make more money from poker, and sleep easier at night, than he could as a lawyer defending clients accused of sexual harrassment. He may even meet a better class of person in card rooms, but that remains a short-head decision at best.
Mark Seif is a very shrewd poker player, who also has a number of good finishes on the World Poker Tour. He is instrumental in the Professional Poker Tour, another initiative of the WPT, and is well-respected in the poker world.
