Mike Caro - Poker Legend
|
Mike Caro is known as the "mad genius of poker", a title that probably owes as much to his hairstyle and beard as it does to anything he has done at the poker table. His entertaining lectures and zany manner are legendary, however. Mike Caro is definitely one of the greatest poker strategists of all time, and his books on poker have been extremely influential.
His insights into money management, poker tells, and betting strategies have influenced an entire generation of poker players. Along with David Sklansky he is recognized as a master of poker theory, and his ability to analyze the game makes him the foremost instructor on how to play. Mike Caro is, unsurprisingly, the founder of the Mike Caro University of Poker. A degree from this institution is probably as difficult to get as a degree from Phoenix University, but the difference is you'll actually be able to provide for your family after you graduate from Caro's school.
Mike Caro's books, seminars, and videos are inavaluable tools for aspiring poker pros, but it would be fair to say that Caro has enjoyed more success as a teacher in recent years than as a player. Poker is a mathematical game to be sure, but is also a game of instinct and psychology, and it is interesting to note than neither Sklansky nor Mike Caro would be considered as being in the top echelon of poker professionals. They are excellent players, clearly capable of winning consistently, but they cannot match the best in the business like Brunson, Reese, Greenstein, or Ivey. Poker at the highest level goes way beyond the pure fundamentals, and becomes far more personal. The success that the best cash game players have enjoyed is derived from their ability to play the opponent and the individual situation rather than playing the cards or using a "by-the book" approach.
Mike Caro was widely acknowledged to be the best five-card draw poker player in the world thirty years ago, but unfortunately that game is no longer in vogue, and is rarely played by professionals these days. Caro contributed an extensive section to the latest version of Doyle Brunson's Super System 2: A Course In Power Poker, and his chapter of 43 exclusive tips alone is worth the price of the book.
