Mixed Reactions to WSOP Final Table Delay
|
May 8 - The decision by the organizers of the World Series of Poker
event to postpone the final table by four months has been met by a flood of
complaints by players and organizations in the industry. However, on the flip
side, many have applauded the move, with some even labeling the decision as "a
masterstroke".
Players have inundated poker blogs and forums with their disagreement over the
decision to hold the WSOP final table event to the 9-10 November, 2008
- four months after the end of this summer's tournament due to start at the end
of the month.
One player wrote on a forum: "Everyone who runs poker has clearly never played
and shows their lack of even traces of intelligence in every subsequent decision
they make."
Opponents of the delay say that it is only encouraging collusion and that the
move was made for pure marketing and financial gain.
However, not everyone is bad-mouthing the move. At least one online poker room,
Everest Poker, has applauded the decision and said that it fully supported the
new schedule. "This move is a masterstroke for the WSOP's global profile and
will undoubtedly make the build up to the final table the most dramatic yet,"
announced the chief marketing officer at Everest Poker, Jennifer Joyce. "From
both a commercial and personal point of view, I am hugely supportive of the
schedule and from a European perspective, it gives everybody a much better
chance to see the biggest event in world poker."
Ty Stewart, speaking for WSOP, said that the new format would encourage people
to discover the great game of poker and its seminal tournament.
