No Exemption on Cards for Online Poker
|
February 14 - While many online poker fans in the United States are optimistic
that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIEGA) passed into law last
year could soon be amended to 'exempt' online poker from its reach, the
reality is that
this will probably never happen.
The argument is that poker, and therefore online poker, is a form of gambling that
requires an above average amount of skill, meaning that it is far more of a skill
game than a luck game, and should therefore not be banned for American-based online
poker
players.
A recent e-article quoted American Gaming Association (AGA) president Frank Fahrenkopf as saying that 'there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that the US
government will make an exception and exempt online poker from UIEGA'.
Fahrenkopf went on to say that the AGA is waiting for a comprehensive study on whether the online gambling industry has the capability as
well as technology
to keep problem gambling to a minimum, as well as prevent underage gambling
online.
The bad news is that according to Fahrenkopf, even if the online gambling
industry proved that it did indeed have the technology and capability to meet these challenges, there is
still no guarantee that online gambling would be legalized in the United States.
