North Dakota Looks to Legalize Internet Poker
|
September 18 - While its looks as though most U.S. states are looking to do away
with and criminalize online gambling, North Dakota State Rep. Jim Kasper is
planning to introduce a bill that would legalize Internet poker in his state.
This means that Internet or online poker companies would be able to actually
base themselves in the state of North Dakota, in terms of hiring staff, hosting
their own servers and running online poker software from the servers.
Kasper has described the proposed Internet gambling ban proposal currently
banging around Congress as 'ridiculous', and has stated publicly that he thinks
his fellow Republicans don't understand online gambling.
Under Kasper's direction, Internet poker operations would be able to 'set up shop' in North Dakota, using the state as a 'haven' for online poker gambling in the U.S.
As such, Internet poker companies would be required to utilize North Dakota's
state-owned bank to prevent money laundering and to protect the players' money, as well as institute age-verification protections into their poker software.
The main benefits to Kasper's proposal, of course, would be that poker players
would benefit from increased 'legitimacy' of U.S.-based online poker rooms,
while the state of North Dakota would enjoy the benefits of taxing the online
poker industry.
This is Kasper's second attempt to pass legislation to legalize online gambling in North Dakota, with the first one overwhelmingly voted down in the state senate last year.
