Online Poker Cheating On Full Tilt - 12-03-07
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
December 3 - Full Tilt Poker is not only a haven for dreaded poker bots (allegedly) but it is now the location of the latest online poker cheating scandal, once again revolving around a huge MTT event. The cheating looks to be a lot less intricate than the Abolute debacle and certainly didn't involve anyone from Full Tilt, but it is nonetheless another black eye for the game.
Basically a fairly well known online tournament player, Chris Vaughn, who plays as "BluffMagCV" and works for Bluff magazine, won the $1 million guaranteed Sunday tourney at FTP. He then went on to win the Sunday Millions tournament the following weekend at Poker Stars. He plays there as "SlippyJacks". The Poker Stars victory has not (yet) been questioned officially, but the Full Tilt win was very fishy indeed.
It turns out that Vaughn did not win that tournament alone. Late in the event a top-class online poker pro took over control of the BluffMagCV account in exchange for a percentage of the profits. Vaughn has been banned from Full Tilt Poker. The poker pro has also been banned.
Sources are confident that the poker pro in question is none other than Sorel Mizzi, who plays as "Imper1um" and has a huge reputation as one of the best young poker talents out there. It often takes hubris to play poker at that level, and so it is no surprise to see these guys believing that they can game any system. Mizzi has not been seen on Full Tilt, seemingly confirming that he was the pro who was involved in this latest scandal.
Did Vaughn cheat on Poker Stars as well? No one has answered that question yet, but if he did it the week before it is would come as no shock to learn that when placed in an identical scenario at another card room that he did it again. Maybe watching Sorel defraud people on FTP gave him enough confidence and insight to win the Stars tournament on his own :)
Online poker needs regulation, and it should come now internally. The card rooms need to share information and resources on cheaters and stop them from destroying the game. Multi-accounting and handing over accounts at the latter stages of MTT's is happening more frequently than anyone cares to think about, and it is both damaging and criminal behaviour.
