Online Poker Sites Part of Banned Australian List

online poker AustraliaMay 29 - Australian citizens are up in arms at an attempt by the Australian Federal government to block thousands of various online websites. Australians are claiming that the government's banning of websites is unethical and a breach of freedom of speech, yet the government is adamant to play the role of "Big Brother".

As of yet, the list has not yet been exposed fully, despite leaks by various organizations about the contents of some of the list which indicates that it includes online poker sites. The government is agreeing to reveal the full contents of the list, to prove their willingness for transparency and will allow the list to be reviewed by prominent Australians and leaders in the community.

The reason that so many people are angered by the list, is that is goes well beyond the original reason for the ban, which was to protect the citizens against child pornography and bestiality. It is rumored that the government also wishes to ban dental sites and political sites, and many online poker sites.

Currently, the publication of the complete list is a criminal offense, even though it is supplied to the makers of internet filters. The Australian Communications Minister has been at the head of the controversy. He recently stated that he was "considering options for greater transparency and accountability in respect of the blacklist."

Free speech activists are claiming that the banning of websites is an ineffective tool and can only lead to further erosion of internet access and freedom of use.

Online poker site operator, Betfair, said that thousands of Australians log onto their site every day and the ban would be a serious financial blow for their company and other online poker sites.
