Online Poker Strategy - Pitfalls To Avoid

Author: Marc Weinberg

Full Tilt Poker offers New Deposit MethodMarch 20 - You deposit money into an online poker account. You win in your first three sessions. Then you decide to play eight hours straight, to take on the $500 buy-in event, to play some no-limit shorthanded cash games and to step into every pitfall possible. Does that sound familiar?

It should because most online poker players experience these massive swings of fortune with a frequency that is extremely frustrating. There are a number of reasons why players give back their winnings, but I'm also going to suggest a strict online poker schedule that can protect those winnings:

I'll divide it into two articles for the sake of brevity so here are those pitfalls.

1. A lack of discipline.

A schedule is the perfect antidote for a lack of discipline, which can infect all aspects of your play from the amount of time you sit at a tough table to chasing an uncomfortable stakes level.

2. Losing focus.

If you play all the time or you play with distractions chances are your focus will suffer. Without complete focus your bankroll cannot survive much less grow in those big money games that we eventually all want to play.

3. No desire.

This one might sound strange because most of us love poker, so how can desire be an issue? Well, online poker can become dull and if you're playing all the time there are moments where you're in a tournament and suddenly don't want to see another hand.

4. Impatience.

Linked to a lack of desire and discipline, but similarly easy to rectify.

5. Greed.

Greed at the table, greed to increase your bankroll as fast as possible, greed is bad (sorry Gordon Gecko) when you're playing poker.

6. Hubris!

Feeling that you are better than everyone else at the table (or in the world) and that you need to play at the top right now is a huge hurdle to overcome.

Fortunately we can fix these problems with a few simple rules. You'll look at online poker in terms of quality not quantity, and you'll be ruthlessly honest with yourself. Your results will be logged, and you will start to win. But how to do that is all for next time.
