Online Poker To Be Offered in Denmark

April 26 - The Danish government announced this week that it was introducing changes to its current gambling market that will see, among other things, the introduction of online poker by foreign and local companies.

Until now, the Danish group, Danske Spil has held a tight monopoly on the market but this will come to an end with the introduction of a series of reforms.

The government said that the changes will go hand in hand with its main aims, which is to protect consumers, and ensure that the country's social groups continue to get what they require. The state made a profit of 2.8 billion kroner out of the 11 billion kroner that was spent on gambling last year, of which 1.6 billion kroner was donated to youth and charitable groups.

Danske Spil will now lose its monopoly on most gambling options, although it would retain control over the Lotto and scratch off ticket games.

The company welcomed the news of the changes and said: "It will nice to get some clarity on some issues after so many years of uncertainty. "We'll also be able to offer casino gambling and poker now, which we couldn't do before."

The news was also well accepted by foreign operators who have been trying to enter the Danish market for a while now. It was pressure from these companies that caused the European Commission to threaten the government with a lawsuit for violating free European market regulations.

It is believed that the changes were brought on mainly by the threat of this lawsuit.

"We are looking forward to, together with the Danish government, creating a modern, regulated and responsible Danish gambling market," said the Chief Executive Officer of Unibet, Petter Nylander.
