Party Poker Woos Las Vegas Casinos - 10-10-07
|
Author: Marc Weinberg
October 10 - The latest online poker rumor, one hesitates to call it news since nothing concrete has actually happened yet, is that PartyGaming could be purchased by a big Las Vegas casino.
The idea presumably is that a brand-name Vegas casino known for their poker room could buy Party Poker and launch their own online poker room. The two properties mentioned were the Mirage and the Bellagio, which makes sense since they're both owned by the same casino group (MGM-Mirage).
This all stems from an interview that Mitch Garber, CEO of PartyGaming, gave at the recent EIG Gaming conference. No less an authority than the Financial Times reported it, so Garber's claim that they would be interested in pursuing talks about a possible sale are probably accurate.
Of more interest to me is the fact that a Vegas casino would even consider such a move. It clearly means that these groups feel that online poker will be legalized and regulated in the near future, and that the UIGEA debacle is a transient piece of nonsenical legislation doomed to fail. Now, you and I may have already known that, but it is more important that big gambling players in the USA also know that.
There is no way that MGM-Mirage would buy and brand an online poker site that was illegal in America, or that could not allow USA players. That would make no sense, just as operating an online poker site from within the USA right now makes no sense (and yet it hasn't stopped Full Tilt or the Absolute/UB alliance, so who knows anymore?).
This seems to be a step in the right direction - a step towards regulation and the inevitable introduction of the big players in the world of gambling. Can you imagine what will happen to this landscape when the Bellagio online casino and poker room opens? Or how about the Google online casino and poker room? When people type in "online casino" one feels confident that Google will rank number 1 for that term.
