Phil Hellmuth To Defend National Heads Up Championship
|
The National Heads Up Poker Championship was a huge success in 2005. Broadcast on NBC to the biggest TV audience for a poker tournament it sought to find the best heads up player in the world. Instead Phil Hellmuth was found, and he surprisingly battled past the other 63 top players to win it all.
This year the tournament will be held in March, as the promoters want to market it as poker's version of March Madness. There will be 64 players competing in elimination rounds until a "Final Four" remain. The event will be held in Las Vegas but is moving up in the world. Last year it was hosted at the Golden Nugget. This year it moves to Caesar's Palace, which is launching a new and impressive (according to Daniel Negreanu's latest blog on the subject) poker room.
All the top players will be there, including Daniel, Johnny Chan, and Chris "Jesus" Ferguson, who finished runner-up to Phil Hellmuth in last year's Championship.
There is $1.5 million in prize money, with the winner set to receive a cool $500,000. One of the 64 spots is being reserved for a wild-card entrant, who is likely to be a no-name satellite qualifier. Should be fun to watch, and we're willing to bet Hellmuth can't repeat - that kind of lucky lightning rarely strikes twice...
