Phil Ivey Pwns Them All At Full Tilt Cash Games - 05-07-08

Author: Marc

Full Tilt PokerMay 7 - Phil Ivey is widely regarded as one of the best poker cash game players in the world and he proved as much on Full Tilt in one spectacular day's work. Ivey was playing a little No Limit Texas Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha and according to the people who spend all their time counting other peoples' money he won between $500,000 and $600,000 while we were enjoying a lazy and unprofitable Sunday.

The one player who took the pwning from Ivey more than any other was trex313, who got schooled in Hold'em and lost a monster $244,000 pot in Omaha that's worth looking at in more detail.

In the Hold'em game trex313 held K-T and Ivey was dealt JJ. The flop came K-T-2 and Ivey led out. Trex313 slow played by simply calling, the turn was a Jack and when Trex then pushed all-in he (one assumes) lost $72,000 on the hand.

The Pot Limit Omaha hand was very interesting because it was a lucky suck-out by Ivey, and when we check the percentages one finds that it was pretty mediocre play, although no one ever criticizes the winners.

Ivey held T-A-A-J while trex313 had Q-6-5-7. The flop came Q-6-2 with one heart. Ivey held the nut flush draw and when the turn was a 4h both players were all-in for a small fortune.

Trex313 had the top two pair and an open-ended straight draw while Ivey was all-in on the nut flush draw. If we look at a poker odds calculator we find that after the turn Ivey was 37% to win the hand. So it's a bad beat and trex313 certainly had the best of it, so was correct to be all-in, and the only factor is his bankroll, which one hopes is Ivey-sized. Phil Ivey can afford the risk so even though he wasn't getting pot odds his poor play is probably excused by the fact that he doesn't really care whether he wins or loses.

The river was a 4, which meant that neither player made the hand they were drawing for, but now Ivey held the top two pair with AA/44 to scoop the pot.
