Phil Laak - Poker Legend
|
He is one of the rising stars of professional poker, but Phil Laak is about to become known as Jennifer Tilly's poker guide and inspiration. Laak, known as "The Unabomber" in poker circles because of his tendency to wear a sweatshirt with the hood up and over his face when he plays poker, introduced Tilly to the game. At the World Series Of Poker this year it was tough to find a more newsworthy or interesting couple than Laak and Tilly. On the same day that Tilly became the first celebrity to win a bracelet event when she captured the No-Limit Tournament for Women, Laak was busy securing the runner-up spot in the Pot Limit Hold'em Event.
Phil Laak is extremely popular due to his unique table persona, and his frequent apperances at televised final tables on the World Poker Tour have made him a familiar (hooded) face. As a result Phil was selected as the host of the E! channel's Hollywood Holdem show.
When he's playing poker he is primarily an entertainer and often keeps the railbirds and his supporters in good spirits with his antics. His refusal to take poker all that seriously, and to have fun with it, has paid huge dividends. Laak was born in Ireland, and hails from Dublin. He is 33 years old.
Laak has relatively little big tournament experience compared to some of the other featured poker champions on the Insider, but he has already won the Commerce Invitational in 2004, and managed numerous final table performances.
He introduced Jennifer Tilly to the game of poker, and she credits Laak with her brilliant win at the WSOP this year. She claimed that she picked up all her poker knowledge through Phil Laak via osmosis!
