 January 9 - A popular
online poker room that was affected by changes to the
anti online gambling laws introduced in the United States in 2006, has reopened.
PokerRoom.com, owned by Bwin Digital Entertainment, was forced to close its
doors to the public in 2009 after struggling to gain its foot in the market,
following a forced exit of the Ongame Poker Network from the United States in
2006.
Poker Room was one of many online poker sites affected by the Unlawful
Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
The site continued to offer real money play but in April 2006 was forced to
admit defeat and announced in a poignant statement that it would be closing its
doors to real money players.
However, in November last year, rumors began surfacing that Poker Room would
be back for business, followed by a dramatic tweet by the SEO Manager for Bwin,
Josef Rantamaki who wrote: Wow! www.pokerroom.com will be relaunched and once
again offer real money poker games."
Late in 2011, a spokesperson for the group revealed that the Pokerroom.com
name had been used as an affiliate and had started to pull traffic in. It was
then that it was decided to "switch it back on".
"It literally was a case of simply flicking the switch," he said.
The soft launch took place recently, and the online poker room has
reopened, even welcoming players with a message that reads:
"We're back... did you miss us?
"PokerRoom is proud to announce its return to the world of
online poker. We have opened our doors again to real money players. Whether
you're a PokerRoom veteran from the past, or a new player just starting out in
poker, we look forward to welcoming you at our tables."
Bwin is Selling Ongame Poker Network
There has been some speculation as to why Bwin Party Digital has decided to
re-introduce PokerRoom.com to the industry now.
One idea is the fact that the group is in the process of selling the Ongame
Poker Network, and the flagship PokerRoom.com, with real money players, clearly
adds more value to the network and could fetch a higher price among buyers.
The other idea is that relaunching the online poker room is part of Bwin's
process of entering the US gambling and poker market, ever since its signed a
partnership deal with MGM and Boyd Gaming last year.
PokerRoom.com is licensed and regulated by the Gibraltar Government.
