Poker Skins Struggle To Build Their Own Online Poker Software
|
A few months ago Betfair boldly announced they would have no further need for Cryptologic's online poker software, and that Betfair Poker would run off proprietary software and no longer be a poker skin. Yesterday saw Betfair announce that they would not go it alone just yet. Slice of humble pie, anyone?
It is the single biggest issue for any new online poker room in our opinion: To become a poker skin and start out with full games but have to pay some other company a hefty license fee, or to build your own poker software and start out with empty games but no licensing costs. Poker.com is one example of a poker room that is new and has decided to go it alone. Their volume of traffic is low right now, but their software is unique and has great features. For instance, if everyone folds a hand to you then you can hit the "rabbit" feature and deal out the remainder of the hand. This is a fantastic feature, if you don't mind showing the rest of the table what you held. Ideal for drawing hands!
Betfair is the world's biggest and best sports betting exchange, and rumors are rife that they are going to list the company on the LSE in 2006. They felt that they needed their own poker software, and news that they would be parting ways with Cryptologic knocked the latter's share price for a loop back in August. But building your own poker software is a huge challenge, not just in terms of how it operates, but also because those Betfair punters looking for a quick poker game will have to wait around a long time now that they can't co-mingle with InterPoker and Caribbean Sun players. What will the boys at Betfair Poker decide to do? The only sure bet is that they haven't decided anything for now.
