Poker Stars Breaks Online Poker Record - 01-03-08

January 3 - If you're a sentient human being whose pockets are not lined with cash from horse racing, state lottery, and tribal casino lobbyists then you revel at the failures of the UIGEA, and scoff at it's translucent inability to prevent people from gambling online. Proof of this act's manifest impotence is this single statistic: more people were playing online poker for cash yesterday on Poker Stars (at the same time) than ever before in the history of the game.
Poker Stars broke through the 20,000 mark yesterday, a monumental achievement in any context, but particularly now in 2008 when personal liberties are threatened. The previous record was held by the lily-livered folks over at Party Poker who hit 16,960 before they fled in terror and holed up in Europe. The prospect of a little hard time is too much for some, but not for our freedom-fighting friends over in Israel (how's that for an oxymoronic statement you won't hear very often in this lifetime).
Poker Stars has joined the battle with UIGEA, and so far they're schmeitzing them to borrow a Yiddish term. You can get your money in and out, and if you're one of the wee wizards who enjoys multi-accounting on Stars you can certainly move that money about thanks to p2p transfers.
It's going to be a very interesting year for online poker, but this industry is unlikely to disappear or even diminish in the face of legal pressure. There is a demand and so long as that is maintained someone will certainly provide the supply.
Somehow American lawmakers have never learned this simple lesson even though the entire country subsists on it - go figure.
