 August 27 - PokerStars, the popular online poker room, has moved further into the French mainstream by inking a lucrative deal with the French TV channel, CANAL+.
The sponsorship deal calls for PokerStars to back some of the media channel's sports programming, including major tennis tournaments such as the US Open and the London Masters.
PokerStars will also sponsor the upcoming Basketball World Championships to take place in Turkey.
The online poker room's entry into the French market comes on the back of its venture into the Spanish sports market.
The group sponsors Spanish basketball and has a deal with the Spanish Basketball Federation.
"Our client PokerStars is very proud to become sponsor of the Federacion Espanola de Baloncesto," said Juanjo Marquez, PokerStars' rep in Spain.
"Being a global brand, this is a significant opportunity to join a leading sport," he said. "PokerStars sponsors numerous teams and sportsmen of international standing and being able to cooperate with the World and European champions is an exciting project by which to convey values like excellence, competition and fair play."
PokerStars is considered the world's biggest online poker site, offering non stop action and a stunning selection of games.
Poker Stars hosts the Sunday Million, as well as the annual World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP).
The site holds the record for hosting the largest ever online poker tournament, with the highest number of people playing at once.
