PPA and the Million Dollar Fight

April 23 - The Chairman of the powerful Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the former Senator Alfonse D'Amato revealed this week that the group has managed to raised $3 million to finance its ongoing battle to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.

This act makes it illegal for banks and other credit institutions to accept payment that originate from or are directed to online gambling sites.

The PPA, which boasts membership of over 1 million American poker players, and is considered particularly powerful in its vocal opposition of the UIGEA and the activities it undertakes to counter the law, is calling for the licensing and regulation of the poker industry in the United States.

In addition, the PPA calls for a recognition of the fact that poker is a game of skill. The group believes that the game should not be lumped together with other casino pastimes and should therefore be exempt from the UIGEA altogether, as long as the law is in place.

The $3 million raised will be used to lobby congress in this session to change the laws relating to the poker industry.

While the PPA has the financial means and the leadership of several powerful, talented people, it nevertheless faces a tough uphill battle, with serious competition.

The National Football League (NFL), for example, is expected to lobby congress not to overturn the UIGEA, arguing that doing so will jeopardize the integrity of football and other sports.

Other sports bodies are also against the legalization of online wagering in the United States. These include hockey and basketball associations, as well as the NCAA and other basketball groups.

The PPA believes, however, that the United States is ripe for change and that the Obama administration will realize the huge financial benefits there are to be had by legalizing the industry.
