July 29 - The Poker Players Alliance has added its support to the launch
of a new lobbying group that aims to push for the legislation and regulation of
online poker and gambling in the United States.
The Washington DC based FairPlayUSA has managed to attract the support of a
number of personalities from the across the board, including poker players,
politicians, consumer protection experts and so forth, and hopes to become an
important presence in the fight to bring about change in the US gambling
industry.
Members include the former Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Ridge, as well as
the Main Event winner of the 2004 World Series of Poker, Greg Raymer.
The group's Executive Director, Maris McNee said about its efforts: "The
website and online petition will be the focal point for recruiting and
organizing supporters who will actively engage and make their voices heard by
members of Congress. Outreach will be directed toward law enforcement officials,
those who support internet consumer safety, and online poker's biggest asset -
the millions of Americans who enjoy online poker."
Defining Existing Laws
One of the aims of the FairPlayUSA will be to define the status
of
online poker room in the United States.
"Current federal law has been unsuccessful in banning illegal
internet gambling," said Tom Ridge.
"I wholeheartedly endorse having policymakers clearly define
what is illegal internet gambling and giving law enforcement the tools necessary
to enforce such a ban. I also strongly support the strict regulation of online
poker. Americans who choose to play poker against each other on the internet
should be assured that the games are fair and limited to adults.
The group will work together with the Poker Players Alliance,
pooling resources and strengthening common goals.
