June 19 - The one million member strong grassroots group, the Poker
Players Alliance is taking advantage of one of the world's biggest
gatherings of poker players this month, and has set up an advocacy booth during
the World Series of Poker tournament.
The booth, which is positioned outside the Amazon Room at the Rio Hotel and
Casino, aims to educate poker players, garner additional support through growing
membership and encourage players to petition their local government
representatives in a bid to get poker recognized as a game of skill.
Chairman for the Poker Players Assocation, Alfonse D'Amato, said: "This is a
one stop shop where PPA members can make a direct impact on protecting the great
American pastime of poker and I urge everyone to stop by while they are at the
WSOP."
The venture will make it simple for non-members to quickly join the
organization by visiting the booth, and continuous online and video displays
will explain the group's activities and aims. PPA members will also be able to
pressure Members of Congress via the special advocacy booth, with the clear
intention of relaying the message that the poker community is strong and active.
"We have come a long way in educating Members of Congress and state elected
officials that poker is a game of skill and not a crime, "said D'Amato. "Yet the
threats to our rights to play this great game have not gone away. The PPA's
Poker Advocacy Booth makes it easy for poker aficionados at the WSOP to make
their voices heard. We are very excited to bring our grassroots efforts to
poker's hallowed ground and we are grateful that Harrah's and the WSOP have
provided us with premium space to get our message out to the poker community."
